A long time ago, in Mexico and Central America, men who were high class of the aristocracy would have their lips pierced and well labret jewelry in them. But it was not only these ancient people who have them in their early traditions. The first nations or Native Indians of the Pacific northwest also used to wear them. In some cultures the lip labrets were mainly worn by women, but in others it was the men who had them. Today, both males and females are seen with this body piercing jewelry.
